David Bercot explains how the early Christians understood 1 Corinthians 11, which talks about the head covering or prayer veil. He demonstrates from the writings of the early Christians that Christian women wore a veil or other covering on their heads when they prayed (and at other times as well).
Bercot goes on to discuss when this custom disappeared among most western Christians. The head covering is still worn today by Mennonite and Amish women and by Christian women in certain other Christian groups.

While I don’t agree with all the conclusions the author comes to, particularly the nature of righteousness and blamelessness before Christ, this short but informative booklet should be required reading for Christians. So much of what Paul writes about our freedom in Christ as sons makes sense when you realize that, because of His grace, our spirits are now inclined to obey rather than disobey. That’s why we no longer need the minutely detailed rules of the law - the law is for those inclined to sin, those led by their flesh. Truly the spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.Product details

What the Early Christians Believed About the Head Covering edition by David Bercot Religion Spirituality eBooks Reviews
Very interesting. Maybe we as Christians should take what the Bible says more seriously and literally. Thanks for the look at and research into the early church.
Well, the content is informative but it is presented in a wordy manner. If I'd bought the book, it probably would have been better, but listening to it, I had to "hear" through the noise.
This short, but clearly written booklet shows that the idea that it was a local custom doesn't fit the evidence.
Who are we to believe that we can better understand what Paul meant than the people who lived in the first and second century?
We are faced with the choice will we allow the Scriptures to speak for themselves or will we value what modern culture dictates?
I don't want to take the risk of acting as though my way is better than this simple yet plain command of the Bible.
You own it to yourself to read this book before you embrace the excuses of modern Christianity to avoid what goes against society's dictates.
purchase without any hitch.
What a controversial topic! Honestly, it's only controversial in the feminist 20th and 21st century.
Scriptures are clear. I only needed this book because I wanted to better understand the history behind the arguments for those who oppose this area of Scriptures, and better understand their viewpoint.
For me, the most valuable comment on the book is the evidence that Corinth was Greek 200 years before Paul wrote his letter, but at the time of his writing, it was Roman, and not wearing a head covering was normal in those days.
Very helpful with some troublesome scriptures. I liked that he used scriptures and ante Nicene writers to prove his points.
I have enjoyed reading other books by David Bercot and I was very blessed by this one. It was thorough in it's research and the research was well delivered. After reading it, I was even more convinced that my wearing a covering (I'm a Christian Beachy Mennonite) is a commandment of God. The book quotes early Christian Theologians such as Tertullian and Clement of Alexandria. It was amazing to read what people thought, questioned, and believed in the early church. Some of the same questions are still being asked today. I also really liked how the author was able to take some of reasons the churches of today do not teach about the coverings and show how they are incorrect in their interpretations of the scriptures in 1 Corinthians 11 1-16. It really makes one think about how and why the modern thinking developed and what should be taught to put the Head Coverings back into our churches today. Please read with an open mind and open heart ready to hear God's Word about what the Head Covering is and why we should be obeying His commandment on the covering.
